Job description: Milling machine operator, specialised in “turning“

Milling machine operators work on lathes or computer-controlled machine tools and produce precision parts in terms of shape and dimension from iron, non-ferrous metals and plastics.

By planning and controlling the work processes and motion sequences, with the aid of the working documents you define which tools, milling and testing equipment as well as the adjuvants and working materials are to be used. The machines are set up by preparing and mounting the means for milling , by setting the machine parameters and the milling of tools and work pieces.  During the milling process you monitor the working motions and auxiliary functions to achieve optimal metal-removal processes

To control the machine tools you write programs taking parameters, coordinates and reference points into account; you then enter these into the data devices, test and - if necessary - optimise the programs and determine the tool correction values.

You assure the production quality by visual inspections and by checking dimensions, shape and position. You carry out maintenance on the machines, devices, tools and test equipment according to maintenance plans or as required.

The apprenticeship lasts 3 1/2 years. (1 year in basic vocational training and 2 1/2 years in professional specialist training)
